Barn Conversion within Listed Curtilage Berkshire

LOCATION ENBORNE BERKSHIRE

PROJECT TYPE BARN CONVERSION

CLIENT FARMER AND LANDOWNER

PROJECT STATUS BUILT

Originally a traditional cart shed within the curtilage of a Grade II listed farmhouse in Enborne, this historic barn has been sensitively converted to provide office accommodation and a holiday let. The design approach sought to preserve the building’s agricultural character and its historic relationship with the surrounding farmyard. The fully glazed north elevation reflects the original open nature of the cart shed, allowing the rhythm and simplicity of the oak frame to remain legible. Flush-fitting conservation rooflights were carefully integrated into the roofscape to introduce natural daylight while minimising visual impact and preserving the building’s historic appearance. Careful consideration was given to adapting the historic structure for contemporary use while respecting its heritage significance. The original oak frame was meticulously surveyed, recorded and reconstructed using locally felled seasoned oak, ensuring continuity of craftsmanship, material authenticity and traditional construction techniques.
