Greenham Control Tower Pavilion Berkshire
LOCATION NEWBURY BERKSHIRE
PROJECT TYPE COMMUNITY-LED BUILDING
CLIENT CHARITY
PROJECT STATUS PRE-APPLICATION
The proposed pavilion at the Grade II-listed Greenham Common Control Tower has been carefully designed to respond sensitively to the historic significance of the former RAF and U.S. Air Force airbase. Positioned between the Control Tower and the U.S. Memorial, the pavilion will provide a permanent replacement for the temporary café canopy, creating flexible sheltered space for visitors, exhibitions and commemorative events. The lightweight steel-framed structure, with its wing-shaped roof and extensive glazing, has been conceived to achieve transparency and visual lightness, preserving key views across the site and maintaining the important spatial relationship between the tower and memorial. The contemporary design contrasts respectfully with the utilitarian Cold War architecture of the existing tower, while supporting the site’s ongoing community and educational use. The proposal has been developed with careful consideration of the site’s heritage significance, and positive feedback was received from the Conservation Officer during the pre-application process.
“I have no concerns with these proposals. The pavilion has been well designed to respond to
the historic structure and will allow for the continued use of the café and other uses that
enable this building to still be used. The use of steel for the roof and the glazing on either
side allows for an appreciation of the building as well as views around it.”
