New Build Contemporary Rural Dwelling Berkshire
LOCATION COLD ASH BERKSHIRE
PROJECT TYPE NEW BUILD HOME
CLIENT SELF BUILDER
PROJECT STATUS ON SITE
We successfully secured planning permission for a contemporary four bedroom replacement rural dwelling in Cold Ash, within the North Wessex Downs AONB, working closely alongside planning consultancy firm Evans Jones. The design approach was rooted in the narrative of the farm itself — recognising that architecture is ultimately an expression of culture, landscape, history and daily life. Through extensive collaboration with the clients, the proposal sought to reflect both the beauty and working reality of the agricultural setting, drawing upon familiar rural building forms in a deliberate yet unpretentious way. The approved single-storey dwelling was carefully embedded within the landscape using natural materials, low ridge heights and retained planting to minimise visual impact while enhancing the character of the site. The scheme successfully demonstrated that contemporary architecture, when informed by landscape, stewardship and local identity, can preserve and enhance the scenic beauty and special qualities of the AONB.
